The first organized congregation of United Brethren Church in the McHenry community was called Spiker Church or Alden Chapel. It met in March of 1888. The first church was located on Bumble Bee Road not far from the location of the present building. This sufficed until 1916 when the church was torn down and relocated to where it now stands, at the fork of Bumble Bee and Mosser Road. Work on the present building began May 15, 1956 directly behind the old structure. Dedication of the new facility was held on Sunday, June 16, 1957.The total cost of the new structure was about $32,000 not including much donated labor and materials.
Groundbreaking for Parsonage was on September 20, 1964. It was completed in January of 1965.
In 1968, after the mergers of the Evangelical United Brethrern Church and the Methodist Church, we became the McHenry United Methodist Church.
In 1983, a new front entrance with a porch, steps, and a new steeple were added to the church. Church members donated chimes in 1984. These continue to play every day at noon and again at 6 p.m. and can be heard all over Mc Henry and the Deep Creek Lake area. In 2001 an additional lot was purchase beside the parsonage in hopes of future expansion. The McHenry United Methodist Church has been blessed in many ways.We continue to grow and serve Christ today, just as those members did over a hundred years ago. |
